Want A Better Sleep? Tape Your Mouth Shut

Waking up feeling unrested after a full night’s sleep and a dry mouth is one of the worst combinations.

But how can you resolve it?

Drinking water before bed?
Going to bed even earlier?
Taping your mouth shut?

Yes, you read that right. While it does sound crazy, there are many benefits: a better sleep, feeling more rested, and a decreased risk of cavities and gum disease.

How will I breathe if my mouth is taped shut?

If your mouth is taped shut while you sleep, you’ll be able to breathe the way that you were meant to: through your nose. You are meant to use your mouth for eating and drinking, not breathing.

If you find yourself breathing through your mouth, you are not alone. Many people breathe through their mouth by default, but it comes with serious consequences:

  • Elevated blood pressure and heart rate
  • Lack of oxygen to the heart, brain, and other organs
  • Worsening of asthma and allergies

What are the benefits of breathing through my nose?

When you breathe through your nose, you get the benefits of nitric oxide, which your body produces in the sinuses. Your body produces 25% of its nitric oxide from nose breathing. This molecule is responsible for enhancing memory and learning, regulating your blood pressure, reducing inflammation, improving sleep quality, increasing strength and endurance, and improving your immune function.

Breathing through your nose in your sleep means that you can:

  • Wake up feeling rested
  • Reduce your blood pressure and risk of heart disease,anxiety, and depression
  • Improve concentration, memory, weight loss, and digestion
  • Relieve headaches, migraines, back pain, sciatica, and neuralgia
  • Strengthen your immune system and resistance to the common cold

Waking up with a dry mouth is more than an inconvenience: it’s harmful to the oral microbiome which can have lasting effects on the rest of your body. If that wasn’t bad enough, a dry mouth means that your teeth aren’t bathed in saliva, which helps teeth fight off cavities through a process called remineralization.

Still not convinced that mouth breathing is that bad? It can also cause bad breath… In most cases, totally preventable bad breath.

How will taping my mouth shut help?

Taping your mouth shut will not only force you to breathe through your nose, it’s also a great at-home diagnostic tool: if you wake up with the tape no longer on your mouth, you know that you didn’t breathe properly.

Many patients will visit an ENT, allergist, or sleep medicine physician to see why they couldn’t keep the tape on their mouths. In most cases, these specialists will be able to treat the root cause of the blockage in your nose.

Go to your local pharmacy and buy a roll of paper tape, not plastic (unless you want to have a hard time taking the tape off) and fold the tape over on both ends so it’s easier to take off. Tape your mouth shut and examine your results.

Did the tape come off in your sleep? This is also great because you can work with your doctor to determine the cause.

The most common culprits for mouth breathing are stuffy, dusty bedrooms, allergies, or a deviated septum which is easily fixed with a common surgical procedure.
