How to Choose the Right Dentist

How to Choose the Right Dentist

Choosing a dentist is kind of like buying a new car.

You do your research, talk to your friends and family, and base your decision on the information you gathered. Both decisions are important and should not be taken lightly. You’re investing time and money into whatever you choose, so making the right choice is critical.

Unlike buying a new car, you can’t return an experience at the dentist if you’re unhappy with it. There are no trade-ins, no negotiating for a lower price, and no warranty to fall back on. That is why choosing the right dentist is so important.

What should I look for when choosing a new dentist?

Everyone has different preferences, so it is hard to provide a checklist, but there are some things that everyone should consider.

Do their hours line up with your schedule?

If you work 9-5 Monday to Friday and you can’t take time off, a dentist office with the same hours likely won’t work for you. Instead look for an office that is open during the evening and on weekends.

Is the dentist operating in a clean space and using modern technology?

This isn’t to say that the dentist you choose needs to have all of the latest technology, but they do need to be up to date. Dentists often use the latest technology to have a better idea of what’s going on in your mouth so that they can diagnose and treat any conditions properly.

What are their credentials?

Your dentist has graduated from dental school (we hope, otherwise that’s a whole different conversation), but have they done any additional training? If you get anxious in the chair, you’re probably going to want a dentist who is trained in ways to make you feel more comfortable. If you have a complex gum problem, finding a dentist that specializes in periodontics (an area of dentistry that focuses on your gums) is your best course of action.

Do they offer new patient exams?

A new patient exam is one of the best ways for you and your dentist to get to know each other. They gain valuable insight from talking to you in addition to actually examining your mouth. We take our new patient exams very seriously.

One patient was recently looking to have a major dental procedure done and since they were spending a considerable amount of money, they wanted to make sure they chose the best people for the job. After speaking with us and hearing what we suggested, they decided to trust our team with their investment.

What are people saying about them?

Just like you’d read reviews before purchasing a new car, you should see what people are saying about their experience with the dentist. Checking social media and Google My Business for reviews is an excellent place to start. If they don’t have social media and you can’t find them anywhere online, reach out to specialists like periodontists, endodontists, and even local dental labs. They have experience working closely with dentists.

Are there dentists in Ottawa that are accepting new patients?

Yes! If you’re looking for a dentist who will be transparent with you about everything from their credentials to the cost of your procedure, reach out to Dr. Andrea Stevens.
